FlyWire and collaborators at Harvard Medical School have released a wiring diagram that encompasses the entire central nervous system of an adult fruit fly. The BANC is a synapse-resolution map of an adult fruit fly brain and ventral nerve cord.
The team has made the entire dataset freely available online at flywire.ai. The BANC is also now available in Codex, the Connectome Data Explorer. Researchers worldwide can continue to improve the connectome by adding new information about fly neurons. Check out the recent Codex Workshop for an overview.
“This is a major open science effort, and a great example of the power of international cooperation and transparency,” HMS neurobiologist Rachel Wilson said.
